The Starting Point

Perdido Key was a perfect starting point for my journey to walk the entire coast of beaches in Florida since it borders Alabama.

  • My Miles Walked: ~6 miles (from the state line east along the beach to a public access point)
  • My Starting Point: Florida-Alabama border on Perdido Key
  • Who Joined me: My Daughter
  • Weather on My Hike: Sunny skies, high 70s, slight breeze, the kind of day that makes you want to write poetry or just lie down and never leave

First Impressions of Perdido Key Beach

I was blown away by this barrier island when I first walked out onto the open beachfront. The beach here is extremely wide with beautiful white quartz sand that stretches endlessly in front of you. The sand is soft and powdery beneath your feet, almost like walking on a blanket of sugar. It feels cool and smooth, even under the hot Florida sun, which is a pleasant surprise compared to other beaches where sand can become scorching. As you take each step, your feet gently sink into the fine grains, making your stride slower, more deliberate, as if the beach is inviting you to relax and take your time.

Start of a Journey

My daughter and I started at the Florida-Alabama border on Perdido Key, toes in the sand, wind in our hair, and a wide open shoreline in front of us. Interestingly, there was nothing, no markers or anything beachside to show exactly where the border is. The line runs between Flori-bama, a local favorite that sits at the border, and the building to the west. From the sign on the road, we estimated that the line was along the path you can see next to Flori-bama’s eating area. We parked and grabbed a bite to eat at Flori-bama before heading down the beach.

As we started this hike, we didn’t know how far we’d go. It was a gorgeous day and the weather was a perfect 70 degrees without a cloud in the sky. So it was easy to keep going.

And we did. We ended up walking over 6 miles in under 3 hours.

The Journey

The first 2 miles was along the commercialized coastal area with condos, hotels and beach houses.

Then we came to Perdido Key State Park.

Hiking Perdido Key State Park

This park is about a mile in length and features an expansive beachfront. There is an official hiking trail on the river side of the park, but why hike through the back trails when you can hike on the shoreline! And the best part is, you can do both for a super awesome hiking experience. Learn more about this park on Florida State Park website here.

Beyond Perdido Key State Park, we continued til we reached access point #2 across from Lost Key Blvd close to the main Perdido Key road. We walked 6 miles, according to my walking tracker app, however, the distance on google maps shows it as just short of 5 miles. When hiking the beaches, there is always extra walking, zig-zagging along the shoreline, in and out of the water, etc. So you will always track more miles than the map shows.

The Turnaround: When Uber Called My Name

After nearly six miles of steady walking, my daughter and I laughed at the thought of walking back. That was a lot of beach. A lot of footprints. A lot of progress. And, a lot of walking back.

So yes, I caved. We called an Uber. Not out of defeat, but out of respect for logistics. I didn’t want to burn myself out and decided to save it for the next stretch.

So Uber it was.

Lesson learned on my very first walk. Keep track of your distance on a walking or hiking app and know your limitations. Then decide how far you want to go, and turn back at the halfway point or be sure you can find another way back.

Walks, Trails & Hike Opportunities

I would highly recommend parking at the Perdido Key State Park for your beach hike, and starting here. You can walk in either direction from the state park for a beautiful walk. If you head west, it is approximately a 2 mile walk to Flori-bama at the border and 4 miles round trip. Another hike would be to simply walk the length of the park and loop back making it a good about 2 mile walk. And remember, the State Park also has a hiking trail on the bay side so you can extend your hike to more environments.

Walking Experience

Walking barefoot here is a must, as the experience is like walking on luxurious powder. Perdido Key’s sand is soft and sugar-white, composed of fine quartz grains. It’s cool underfoot, even on hot days. It was a bit cold on the day of my walk and I was fast pace walking, so I kept my sneakers on for most of the walk. But of course, I kicked them off a few times to get my feet in the luxurious sand to ground myself and feel the serenity of the shoreline.

The beachfront is relatively flat, though the soft sands is deceptively brutal on long walks making your legs feel like they are walking on an eliptical. You don’t realize how much work your legs are doing until you’re halfway through and wondering why your quads feel like they’ve just been personally betrayed by gravity.

But it is still pure joy with each step as your feet gently sink into the fine grains, making your stride slower, more deliberate, as if the beach is inviting you to relax and live in the present moment.

Tips for Your Beach Hike: What to know before you go

  • Start early or go later in the day to avoid the hottest sun.
  • Consider tides and weather to maximize walking on firmer, wet sand or dry softer sand, and to include shelling in your experience.
  • Understand the soft sand of Perdido Key and how it impacts walking difficulty. Walking in the soft sand is almost like walking on an elliptical so be prepared for extra work on your lower body, calves and thighs.
  • If you plan to walk along the water’s edge, consider water shoes to protect your feet from sharp shells, jellyfish, or debris.
  • Build stamina with shorter hikes before tackling long beach trails.
  • Respect wildlife; don’t disturb nesting birds or marine life.
  • Leave no trace—pack out all trash, and avoid stepping on delicate ecosystems like dunes or tide pools.

As the sun rises and sets along the coast, people gather to witness this beautiful natural occurance. There is nothing quite like watching the sun come up or set across the vast waters of the Gulf.

My Reflections

Walking six miles on Perdido Key was more than a hike, it was a declaration and a validation to my journey.

A declaration that I’m serious about this journey. That I’m willing to put in the steps, endure the tiredness, and embrace the soreness. That I believe every beach has a story to tell, and I’m going to listen to each one.

A validation that this is where I want to be, walking with the the vibrant contrast of colors, the dazzling white sand against the turquoise water, the breeze that carries the faint, salty tang of the Gulf, mingling with the warmth of the sun on my skin. Looking out at a horizon that seems to stretch forever to a soft blur where the sky meets the sea, giving the whole scene a dreamy, endless quality. This is the beauty of a beach hike that sets it apart from traditional hikes.

Perdido Key welcomed me not just to the start of my Florida journey, but to the rhythm of this trip: slow, steady, and soaked in wonder.

I left feeling refreshed and more grounded and ready to continue on my quest to walk on every beach starting in Florida.
