Shells in the Shadows

    Reflections in Sanibel Island.

The tide was pulling back fast this morning. The waves had been rough overnight, not violent, but steady, strong, persistent. You could see where they’d reshaped the shore. The sand wasn’t flat and smooth like it usually is after calm water. Instead, there were ledges, miniature sand cliffs running parallel to the tide line, carved by pressure and motion.

They’re easy to overlook at first, just uneven edges, disruptions in the clean path. But that’s where I found the beauty.

Tucked into those ledges were the best shells I’ve seen in weeks. Tiny spirals, polished fragments of sand dollars, rare pink scallops, and Florida conch shells, all hidden in those shallow drop-offs the water had carved overnight.

Not in the wide-open stretches. Not in the tidy, undisturbed places. But right there in the ledges. The places shaped by pressure.

    That’s how life is, too.

We search for beauty in the main paths, the smooth seasons, the wide-open peace. But so often, the most meaningful things, the wisdom, the character, the deep joy, are formed and revealed in the uneven, pushed-around places. Hiding there in the aftermath of rough waters.

Life doesn’t only hand us gifts in perfect packaging. Sometimes, we have to slow down and look carefully at the places formed by rough seas, because that’s where the real treasures are tucked.

The beauty you’re looking for might not be out in the open, it may be waiting for you in the places shaped by struggle. – Patti Jewel
