Some of the best lessons don’t come from above, they rise from beside you.
There’s a rhythm to raising children that’s not unlike the sea.
At first, you’re the one guiding, holding their hands at the water’s edge, teaching them how far to go, when to turn back, what to look out for.
But if you’re paying attention, something magical happens over time.
The tide shifts.
Their voices get stronger.
Their steps more sure.
And slowly, without realizing it, you’re no longer just leading,
you’re learning.
The world tells us that wisdom travels in one direction, from the older to the younger, from the experienced to the inexperienced.
But real life doesn’t work like that.
Wisdom moves like water.
It flows back and forth, shaped by love, presence, and curiosity.
Our kids see things differently.
And sometimes, more clearly.
My children have been my greatest teachers.
They’ve taught me how to sit with emotion.
How to speak gently but truthfully.
How to be braver, softer, and more awake to the world.
They taught me that love doesn’t mean control, it means respect.
They reminded me that listening isn’t just a kindness, it’s a responsibility.
And now, they lead too.
They are the voices I trust.
The people I turn to.
The mirrors that reflect the best back to me, even when I forget it’s there.
I didn’t raise followers.
I raised leaders.
And in doing so, I became a better version of myself.
You don’t always have to know everything.
Sometimes your job is to cultivate growth so others can lead
and to have the humility to follow when it’s their turn to shine.
The ocean teaches us to respect the flow.
The tide comes in. The tide goes out.
Teach. Learn. Grow.
It’s not a one-way journey.
It’s a conversation.
“I didn’t just teach my children. They taught me. And together, we grew.” – Patti Jewel
