Camp Helen State Park, located on the far west end of Panama City Beach, is a tranquil escape that offers a mix of history, nature, and untouched beauty. From a personal perspective, visiting this park felt like stepping into another world, far from the busy beaches and tourist attractions that Panama City Beach is often known for. It’s a place where the past and nature collide in the most peaceful, serene way.
The Beauty of the Landscape

One of the first things that strikes me when entering Camp Helen is the diversity of the landscape. On one side, you have the pristine Gulf of Mexico with its stunning white-sand beaches, while on the other, the shimmering waters of Lake Powell, one of the largest coastal dune lakes in Florida, offers a totally different experience. The contrast between the freshwater lake and the salty Gulf makes for a unique setting that you don’t see elsewhere. And at times, when the coast lake if full, it flows out into the gulf in an interesting mix of the two bodies of water.
The beach itself is often quiet and uncrowded, making it a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the natural surroundings. I love walking along the shoreline, where the dunes rise majestically in the distance, creating a sense of solitude. The sand here is soft and powdery, just as you’d expect along the Emerald Coast, and the water is that mesmerizing shade of emerald green.
Exploring the Dune Lake: Lake Powell

Lake Powell is a special gem within the park, and it’s what makes Camp Helen stand out from other state parks in the area. The lake is brackish, meaning it’s a mix of fresh and saltwater, and it’s teeming with wildlife. One of my favorite things to do is paddleboard or kayak across the lake. It’s a peaceful escape, surrounded by the wild beauty of the park. The trees and vegetation around the lake are lush, and often you’ll spot birds and other wildlife along the shore.
It’s also fun to fish in the lake, as it holds both saltwater and freshwater fish species. I’ve caught a variety of fish here, and even if you’re not into fishing, just being out on the water, with the calmness of the lake and the distant sound of the Gulf waves, is a restorative experience.
A Hidden Historical Treasure

Camp Helen has a rich history that’s woven into the park itself. Originally used as a company retreat for employees of Avondale Mills, the historic buildings are still standing, adding an interesting historical dimension to the park. I love exploring the old lodge and cabins, imagining what it must have been like for people vacationing here back in the day. The sense of history is palpable, and it adds a nostalgic layer to the natural beauty of the place.
For anyone interested in Florida history, walking through the park’s historic district is a must. It’s fascinating to see how the park has been preserved over time, blending the old structures with the untouched environment.
Hiking and Nature Trails
There are several trails winding through Camp Helen, and one of my favorite ways to experience the park is by taking a leisurely hike through the pine forests and coastal scrub. The trails are well-maintained but still feel rugged enough that you get a true sense of being in nature. Walking these paths feels like an adventure in itself, with each turn offering new glimpses of the park’s diverse flora and fauna.
One trail takes you to the beach area along the dunes, where you can feel the cool breeze from the Gulf. Another leads you through the forested areas where the towering pines and thick underbrush offer a completely different vibe—shady, peaceful, and sometimes dotted with wildflowers. It’s a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Florida’s coastline.
Sunsets and Solitude
Perhaps my favorite part of visiting Camp Helen is staying for sunset. The park faces west, making it the perfect spot to watch the sun sink into the Gulf. Because it’s far less crowded than Panama City Beach proper, there’s often a sense of quiet reflection as the sky transforms into a kaleidoscope of oranges, pinks, and purples. I’ve sat on the beach many times here with just a handful of other visitors, and it always feels like a personal, intimate experience.
The combination of the untouched shoreline, the rolling dunes, and the vast expanse of water makes the sunsets at Camp Helen feel extra magical. It’s a place where you can just sit and take it all in, away from the noise and chaos, and feel truly connected to nature.
In my experience, Camp Helen State Park is not just a place to visit for the beach or for history, it’s a place to escape, to find peace, and to reconnect with the natural beauty of the Florida coast.
