The beaches in the Destin area are truly some of the most stunning along the Gulf Coast. Each one has its own unique character, but all share that beautiful turquoise water and powdery white sand that the region is famous for. Whenever I’m in Destin, I feel like I’ve stepped into a postcard—it’s just that perfect.

On the downside, these beach areas can get crowded, especially during the summer or spring break. And some places are harder to access due to stretches of private only beach access. But if you enjoy a lively beach atmosphere with easy access to restaurants, shops, golfing, and watersports, Destin offers you the perfect vacation destination.

The energy of Destin’s main beaches, is a mix between families, retirees, young, old, locals, and tourists. It is a destination where you can easily pop into a beachfront restaurant for lunch or grab a drink while you’re enjoying the sand and sun. The public beach areas are well-kept, and you’ll find everything you need—showers, restrooms, and parking are easily accessible.

Hitting the Beach!

The beaches in the Destin area are truly exceptional. The sand is like nothing else, powdery white and soft underfoot, and the water is always inviting, no matter where you are. Walking along the shoreline in Destin is an awesome way to experience the shoreline, culture and wildlife. Every beach in the area has its own personality, but they all share that same stunning beauty that keeps me coming back time and time again. Something notable about the Destin / Miramar beaches that I love is how meticulously maintained they are. The city keeps these beaches sifted and clean so beachgoers can experience the pure beauty of this shoreline.

June White Decker Park Beach

Decker Beach is one of those local hidden gems that’s off the beaten path and is the first public beach along the Destin coast on the west end. It’s not as commercialized or well-known as some of the larger beaches, and I love it for that reason. The park also is also a nice place to take a walk off the beach that is surrounded by the sound of waves and the gentle breeze.

Henderson Beach State Park

Henderson Beach State Park is one of my favorite spots for a more “natural” beach experience. I love that it feels a bit more remote and protected, even though it’s so close to Destin’s main attractions.

The sand dunes are absolutely breathtaking and are some of the tallest in the area, adding s beautiful sense of wilderness to the beach. It is unusual in that it is just over a mile long of undeveloped shoreline in between development and beach homes and resorts on both ends, providing a sweet preserved spot in between.

What sets Henderson Beach apart from other spots in Destin is how well it’s preserved. Walking through the sand dunes on the boardwalk trail to get to the beach is absolutely spectacular as you cross over the protected sand dunes.

I love walking the nature trails, which wind through the dunes and offer glimpses of local wildlife like shorebirds, rabbits, and the occasional dolphin sighting in the Gulf. The park is also a great spot for a picnic, with covered pavilions and plenty of space to set up for the day. The water here is always so clear, perfect for swimming, and the waves are usually gentle, making it a great family-friendly destination.

Crystal Beach

Whenever I think of quintessential Destin beach days, I think of Crystal Beach. Of course, I stayed at the Beachside Inn directly across the street from the Shores at Crystal Beach Park access point.

This beach in Destin is the perfect spot in the middle of it all. From here you are just down the street from the Destin Commons shopping center and tons of restaurants. Destin’s Harborwalk is a short drive to the west and the main hub of Destin and Miramar beaches are a short drive to the east. And it is right next to Henderson Beach so getting my 2 mile walk in along the dunes of Henderson is a spectacular way to enjoy a walk in the sand!

Another thing I love about Crystal Beach is it feels like a true neighborhood beach. It has a laid-back, residential feel with pastel-colored beach cottages lining the shoreline. It’s a popular spot for both locals and visitors, but it still maintains a relaxing atmosphere compared to some of the busier beaches. Even the staff at Beachside Inn were welcoming and made me feel right at home.

One thing to keep in mind about Crystal Beach is that many sections are private, especially closer to the beachfront homes and condos. However, the public access points are well-maintained, and you can still find plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the day. It’s one of those beaches where you can easily spend the whole day, grabbing lunch from a nearby restaurant and coming back to your beach chair without missing a beat.

As you head east from Crystal Beach, you’ll pass through a stretch of private beach homes and resorts where there is no public access until you reach James Lee Park.

Destin Main Public Beach at James Lee Park

This park offers a huge parking area directly beachside with the Crap Trap Restaurant in the middle. This is one of the top beach access points in the area and features a boardwalk along the entire stretch, facilities, food and more. This is fantastic for those spending a day at the beach where you can eat, enjoy a cocktail, and soak in the vibrant Destin culture.

Heading east from this point, again, you will pass private beach access points until you reach Miramar’s Main Beach Access.

Miramar Beach Access

Miramar Beach is an extention of Destin with the same beautiful white sand and vibrant turquios water, but with a slightly more relaxed atmosphere as you get further from the heart of Destin. The main access point is at Pompano Joe’s. This spot is similar to the James Lee/Crap Trap spot with a huge parking lot, a restaurant, facilities and activities. There’s a long stretch of public beach access, and it’s a great place for families, especially because of the abundance of parking, restrooms, and food options nearby.

The beach heading east is still lined with resorts and condos with private access points, but then has another stretch of parallel parking and public access further east.

Just a bit east of that is my favorite sunset spot along the Destin Beaches, the South Walton Access Point. This access point sits high above the beach area with stairs and a ramp to get down to the beach. It was a favorite spot for my daughter and me to pick up a lunch and go sit here to enjoy our meal and just take in the beauty of the beachfront or go just before sunset for a spectacular view. Surfhut restaurant, another favorite of ours, is also really close to this spot where you can literally sit on the back deck and enjoy the beach while you eat a delicious meal.

Private Beach Areas

One thing you’ll notice as you explore the Destin area is that there are a lot of private beaches, especially near the private homes, condos and luxury resorts. Many of these areas are reserved for guests or residents of specific properties. The private beaches tend to be less crowded and offer a bit more exclusivity, which is nice if you’re staying in one of the resorts, but they can feel a little restrictive if you’re hoping to explore different parts of the coastline.

While these beaches are private to access from the roadway, you can still walk to them beachside from one of the public access points. I walked the complete coastline of Destin/Miramar through all of the private beach areas. Actually, during my visit, some of the private access beaches were busier than the public ones! The main difference is that these resort beaches tend to offer amenities such as chair and umbrella rentals and experiences you might not get at the public areas.
