Seaside, Florida, is one of those places that has a lasting impact on you. Known for its New Urbanism design and laid-back vibe, Seaside is both charming and vibrant, offering a unique blend of architecture, community, and beach culture. If you’ve ever seen the movie The Truman Show, you’ve already had a glimpse of Seaside, as it served as the backdrop for the film. But Seaside is so much more than its picturesque streets—it’s an experience that stays with you long after you leave.
The Architecture and Atmosphere

Seaside’s design was revolutionary when it was built in the 1980s. It was one of the first towns in the U.S. created under the principles of New Urbanism, meaning the entire town is walkable, pedestrian-friendly, and designed to foster a sense of community. The houses are a mix of pastel-colored cottages, white picket fences, and Southern-inspired architecture with wide front porches—creating a postcard-perfect aesthetic. Walking through Seaside feels like stepping into a utopian coastal town, where everything is bright, orderly, and yet relaxed.
What I find striking about Seaside is how intimate it feels. It’s a small community, but every street, every shop, and every public space feels welcoming. You can walk or bike everywhere, which adds to the laid-back vibe. There’s something special about not having to drive anywhere—it feels like a true escape from the busyness of everyday life.
The Beach at Seaside

Of course, one of Seaside’s main attractions is its beautiful beach. The sand is soft and white, and the water is that classic emerald green that the Gulf Coast is known for. One of the best parts of the Seaside beach experience is the pavilions that lead down to the shore. Each pavilion is architecturally unique, adding a bit of flair to your beach access. My personal favorite is the Seaside Pavilion, with its clean, minimalistic design that frames the ocean perfectly as you walk toward the water.

The beach is spacious enough to never feel crowded, even during the summer. Because Seaside is such a walkable town, the beach is accessible no matter where you stay, whether in a rental home or one of the small inns in the community. There’s also something wonderfully unhurried about a day at the Seaside beach. People come here to truly relax—lounging under umbrellas, playing in the surf, or simply taking in the view.
The Town Square

At the heart of Seaside is the town square, which is one of my favorite parts of the community. The square is lively yet relaxed, with green spaces surrounded by shops, food trucks, and cafes. The iconic Seaside Post Office, with its clean, white design, sits right at the center, and it’s become a photo spot for many visitors.
The town square is always buzzing with activity, whether it’s families lounging on the grass, children playing, or couples enjoying coffee from Amavida Coffee & Tea. The food trucks along Airstream Row are another favorite, offering everything from gourmet grilled cheese to fresh smoothies. One of the best ways to spend an afternoon in Seaside is simply wandering from shop to shop, grabbing a bite to eat, and people-watching in the square.
Exploring by Bike
Seaside is one of the most bike-friendly towns I’ve ever visited. The streets are narrow and shaded by oak and magnolia trees, making it perfect for a leisurely bike ride. Biking around Seaside feels freeing—there’s no need to worry about traffic or parking, and you can effortlessly hop from the beach to the town square to explore the surrounding neighborhoods.
Biking through Seaside, you’ll notice how thoughtfully designed everything is. There are hidden pathways, charming side streets, and every corner seems to offer something new to discover. Renting a bike is almost a necessity when you visit, as it’s the best way to fully take in the town and its surroundings.
The Seaside Amphitheater
One of Seaside’s most cherished community spots is the Amphitheater. This open green space is a hub for events, especially during the summer. Families gather here with blankets and picnic baskets to watch outdoor movies, listen to live music, or participate in community activities. It’s one of the things that makes Seaside so special—there’s a real sense of community, where locals and visitors come together to enjoy simple pleasures.
I’ve been there for an outdoor concert before, and there’s something magical about sitting under the stars in this beautiful space, surrounded by others who are also embracing the laid-back Seaside vibe. It’s the kind of place where you feel like you’re part of something bigger, even if you’re just there for a short time.
The Chapel and Simplicity of Life
Another beautiful aspect of Seaside is the Seaside Chapel, a simple yet stunning building nestled in the town’s center. The white wooden chapel is often used for weddings, community gatherings, or simply as a peaceful place to sit and reflect. It embodies the simplicity and beauty that Seaside is known for.
Living or vacationing in Seaside encourages you to slow down. It’s a place where you wake up with the sun, stroll to the market to grab some fresh fruit or pastries, and spend your day either on the beach or exploring the town. The pace of life in Seaside feels slower, in the best possible way.
Events and Traditions
Seaside also has a variety of seasonal events that bring the community together. Whether it’s the annual Seeing Red Wine Festival in the fall or Fourth of July celebrations with fireworks on the beach, there’s always something happening that adds to the vibrant culture of Seaside.
Another beloved tradition is the Seaside Farmers Market, which happens every Saturday morning. The market is a favorite for both locals and visitors, with vendors selling everything from local produce to handmade goods. It’s the perfect way to start your weekend in Seaside.
Seaside is a place that captures your heart with its charm, beauty, and sense of community. It’s a town that makes you want to stay longer, even after you’ve packed up and are ready to leave. Whether you’re lounging on the beach, biking through its peaceful streets, or enjoying the local food trucks, Seaside makes you feel like you’re part of a small, idyllic world where simplicity and beauty reign.
It’s a place where time seems to slow down, and for a brief moment, you can truly relax and embrace the joy of living life at a slower, more intentional pace.
