Topsail Hill Preserve State Park is one of those places that just blows you away with the huge dunes and natural Florida feel. This gem along Florida’s Gulf Coast, between Destin and 30A, is often overlooked by tourists looking at those two popular destinations. From the moment you enter the park, it’s clear that Topsail is more about connecting with the environment rather than the crowds and bustle you might find elsewhere.
The Beach at Topsail Hill
The beach at Topsail is breathtaking, and I love the sense of discovery you get as you approach it. You don’t park right at the shoreline like many other beaches. Instead, you take a tram or enjoy a leisurely walk down the trail, which adds a bit of anticipation and adventure to the visit. As you wind through the natural landscapes of the park, past towering sand dunes, serene coastal forests, and tranquil wetlands, the beach gradually reveals itself. When you finally step onto the sand, it feels like you’ve stumbled upon a slice of paradise.
The Sand
The sand here is the classic sugar-white that the Emerald Coast is famous for, but because the beach is part of a state park, it’s wonderfully unspoiled. There are no high-rises or beachside developments in sight, which makes Topsail feel like a true escape. The water, on a sunny day, is that signature turquoise color that seems to glow in the sunlight. It’s always clean, clear, and perfect for swimming. The peacefulness of this beach really stands out, especially during the off-season when you can find yourself nearly alone, with nothing but the sound of the waves and the gentle breeze to keep you company.
The Dunes

One of my favorite features of Topsail Hill is the incredible sand dunes. These dunes are some of the tallest and most pristine I’ve seen along this part of the coast. They create this beautiful, rolling landscape that gives the beach a dramatic, untouched quality. The dunes also act as a buffer from the world beyond the beach, making you feel like you’ve entered a remote, natural oasis. There are boardwalks that allow you to explore and observe without disturbing the fragile ecosystem, and I always make it a point to take in the views from the top of the dunes. It’s a stunning perspective, with the Gulf stretching out endlessly before you.
A Quiet Escape
What really sets Topsail Hill apart is how quiet it is. Even on a warm day, you don’t have to worry about fighting for space on the sand or listening to noisy groups of people. It’s a beach that invites relaxation, whether you’re stretched out in a chair with a good book, just lying on the sand, or walking along the shoreline letting the sound of the waves wash over you. The atmosphere is serene, and I’ve always felt like it’s a place to recharge and disconnect from the busyness of everyday life.
Because it’s a state park, there are also plenty of opportunities for nature walks and birdwatching, which I always take advantage of before or after my beach time. The nearby coastal dune lakes are the most unique part of this area along Florida’s coast, and you can rent a kayak to explore them if you’re in the mood for a little adventure.
A Place for Everyone
Although it’s a peaceful escape, Topsail Hill is also family-friendly. I’ve seen families enjoying picnics under the shade of the pavilions, kids playing in the shallow water, and nature lovers exploring the trails. The facilities are well-maintained, with clean restrooms and showers, and there’s even a small camp store if you need any last-minute supplies. For campers and RV travelers, the park has a lovely campground that makes it easy to turn a day trip into a longer stay.
Topsail Hill State Park is a place I love for its simplicity, beauty, and the way it allows you to experience the Florida coast in its natural state. It’s not about entertainment or activities here, it’s about the beach, the dunes, and the quiet. For me, a visit to Topsail is a chance to reset and enjoy one of the most beautiful, serene beaches on the Gulf Coast. If you’re looking for a peaceful, natural beach experience without the distractions of modern development, Topsail Hill is a must-see.
